I didn’t have a birthday party this year. It’s not that I don’t like to celebrate it or that I dislike growing older, but I knew if I waited a few weeks something better than any birthday party was about to happen.
You see, every year, over Easter weekend, a group off friends, family members, strangers—whomever—gather together in a National Park somewhere. We call the trip ‘Glory Glory’ and this year we pitched our tents on the valley floor of Yosemite National Park.
The outdoors is the place to gather all your favorite people and all their favorite people. It’s a space where walls come down—especially when you’re struggling up trails together, sharing meals, and retelling the story of that funny thing you both saw on the bus back to camp around the campfire.
Sitting fireside is my favorite view during these trips because it means there’s a cold drink in my hand, or a meal, or a guitar, or a marshmallow skewer, and I’m most likely learning about the human sitting next to me or listening to someone else learning about who is sitting next to them.
It’s not just about the location when it comes to camping and enjoying the outdoors—it’s about the people to your left and right. That’s all I wanted for my birthday, and boy did I get what I was hoping for! And I hope you do too.
